How do I back up my data and move to a new phone?
On an iPhone, your rifles, loads and logs back up to your own iCloud Drive, and a new iPhone signed into the same Apple ID offers Restore from iCloud the first time the app opens. On Android, save a backup to a file or cloud drive with Backup to Cloud / File in Settings, then use Restore from Cloud / File on the new phone.
The steps
Backup and restore are free; no Pro or trial is needed. The two phones back up differently, so each step says which phone it is for. These steps move your data between two phones of the same kind.
-
iPhone: check the backup before you switch. Open Settings, then iCloud Backup. The app says “Your data backs up automatically to your personal iCloud Drive. Only you can see it.” The status line reads Backed up with a time once a backup exists. Tap Back Up Now to make one before you switch phones. If it says “Sign in to iCloud in Settings to enable automatic backups.”, sign in to iCloud first.
-
iPhone: read any orange notice. The app says the iCloud backup can leave out large attachments or unshared TAK packages. When that happens, Settings shows an orange notice under the backup status that says what was left out, and nothing is deleted from the phone. Settle that before you wipe the old phone.
-
iPhone: restore on the new phone. Sign in to the same Apple ID, install Ballistics Calculator, and open it. If it finds your backup in iCloud Drive, it asks Restore from iCloud? and says it “will load your rifles, loads, shot logs, DOPE, and settings from your last device.” Tap Restore from iCloud. Do not tap Start Fresh unless you mean it: the app warns that the next backup will replace your existing iCloud copy with an empty snapshot.
-
iPhone: restore later from Settings. In Settings, then iCloud Backup, Restore asks Restore from iCloud? and warns it “will overwrite your current data with the newest iCloud backup. This cannot be undone.” Confirm with Replace Local Data. Choose an older backup to restore… lets you pick an earlier one.
-
Android: save a backup to a file or cloud drive. Open Settings, then Manual Export & Import. In the Cloud Backup section, tap Backup to Cloud / File and pick Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or local storage in the system picker. The Auto-Backup switch below it only saves a local backup when the app closes, so use the cloud or file backup to move.
-
Android: restore on the new phone. Install the app, open Settings, then Manual Export & Import, and in the Cloud Backup section tap Restore from Cloud / File. Pick the backup file. You see a preview before anything is replaced, and the app warns that restoring replaces all existing data and cannot be undone.
-
Bring Pro back on either phone. Sign in with the same Apple ID or Google account that bought it and tap Restore Purchase in Settings, then Upgrade to Pro. The 7-day free trial cannot be started a second time on a new phone.
If it went a different way
- You only want a copy of your rifles and loads. On the iPhone, Settings, then Manual Export & Import (the screen is titled Data Backup & Restore) saves a partial copy as a JSON file: rifles, loads, shot log, saved calculations, ammo, barrels, atmosphere presets and DOPE entries. Importing it adds to what is on the phone and replaces nothing.
- You are moving between an iPhone and an Android phone. Pro bought in one store does not carry over to the other kind of phone. To get a rifle or load across, share it instead of restoring a backup (see the share page).
- Android says your data is too big for its automatic backup. The app shows a banner. Use Export Complete Backup or Export Current Data on the same screen.
- A restore asks to replace your data and you are not sure. Back out at the confirmation. Restoring cannot be undone.
A backup is a copy, not a live sync: whatever you changed after the last backup is not in it. The iPhone’s manual JSON file is partial and does not include reticles, range cards, planner stages, matches, chrono sessions or custom target photos, so do not treat it as your only copy. On Android, every backup leaves out mission log entries you marked sensitive or restricted. (Guide: Backup)
